Clayton is a town in and the county seat of Barbour County, Alabama. It was designated as the county seat in 1834, and as such, it is geographical center of the county as well. It is named after Augustine S. Clayton, a Georgia jurist and congressman.

Four structures in the town are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Whiskey Bottle Tombstone located here and featured on Ripley's Believe it or not, is also well-known. Barbour County Schools administer public schools in the town, which comprises one high school and one primary school.
