Courtland is a town in Lawrence County, Alabama. It is part of both the Decatur Metropolitan Area, as well as the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. It has a total area of 2.3 square miles, of which 0.43% is water. The town was incorporated in 1819, before which there was a Native American village on the same site. The Courtland Army Airfield (Courtland AAF) was established here during WWII, in the years 1944-45. It was dismantled once the war was over. Architecturally, the area is rich with a number of structures belonging to different eras reflecting different trends in style and taste. The John McMahon House, a Federal style home that was built around 1830, is a part of the National Register of Historic Places. Many such noteworthy buildings are present here.

Manufacturing, retail trade and educational services are the major economic activities of the area. Air transport is handled by the Industrial AirPark. Public education is given by RA Hubbard High School. A private school named Three Springs of Courtland is also present. The closest hospital is the Lawrence Medical Center, located about 13 miles away in Mouton. Courtland's cost of living is 16.40% lower than the country average, making living here significantly cheaper.
