Cullman is a city in and the county seat of Cullman County, Alabama. Originally, this was a part of Cherokee Nation. The minor Battle of Day's Gap during the American Civil War was fought here. It was named after its founder, Colonel John G. Cullmann, who established the settlement in 1873. It was incorporated in 1878. The city as a total area of 19.1 square miles. 18.3 square miles of the area is land, and water comprises 0.9 square miles. It is top of Brindley Mountain, which is an offshoot of Sand Mountain. It is situated at an elevation of 826 feet.
Public education is administered by the Cullman City School System, comprising five schools- East Elementary, West Elementary, John G. Cullman Middle School, and Cullman High School. Some private schools are also available here. Though the economy has diversified, agriculture continues to remain the most significant economic activitity here. Cullman County has the highest agricultural production in Alabama, and is also one of the sixty largest agricultural-production counties in the country. Other economic activities include manufacturing, construction and trade. The closest hospital is the Cullman Regional Medical Center, and the next one is Hartselle Medical Center, located about 20 miles away in Hartselle. Cullman' cost of living is 10.10% lower than the country average, making living here comparatively cheaper.
