Brief Information About Demopolis

Demopolis is a city in Marengo County, Alabama. With a population of 7,483 during the 2010 census, it is also the largest city in the county. It lies at the meeting point of the Black Warrior and Tombigbee rivers, within a region called Webb's Bend, atop a chalk hill locally known as White Bluff. It has a total area of 12.5 square miles. 12.2 square miles of the area is land and 0.2 square miles (2.00%) is water. The city was settled in 1817, and incorporated in 1821, making it one of the oldest continuous settlements in the state. Demopolis means "People's City". Historically, this was a popular river hub that transported large amounts of cargo, along with attracting visitors with steamboats and barges. Later, during the twentieth century, cotton production and processing was the major industry, which was hard hit by boll weevil infestations.
The city also had a thriving theatre scene, and other cultural activities. When the cotton industry declined, it made way for other industries such as the cement, lumber, and paper industries. Other economic activities included animal husbandry and aquaculture for catfish.

Due to the long history of the settlement, the city has a number of historic sites, which includes but is not limited to Gaineswood, Bluff Hall, Laird Cottage, Demopolis Town Square, Lyon Hall, the Curtis House, the Glover Mausoleum, and the Foscue-Whitfield House. The city has served as inspiration as well as location for plays and films.

The city has two elementary, one middle and two high schools within the public schooling system. The closest hospital is the Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital Inc., located on Highway 80 East. Demopolis' cost of living is 13.90% lower than the country average, making living here comparatively cheaper.
