Brief Information About Detroit

Detroit is the largest city in Michigan. It is situated in the southeast part of the state on the bank of River Detroit.

Detroit is the oldest city of the seaboard colonies and was founded by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac on July 24, 1701. The French were the first settlers, and they gave the city its name from their word meaning “strait,” referring to Detroit River connecting Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair. The river forms part of the international boundary. It marks the only point where Canada lies directly south of U.S. territory.

Detroit was fought over by the French, the British, and the Indians during the French and Indian Wars because of its strategic location. During the American Revolutionary War it was the headquarters for the British forces in the Northwest Territory. Detroit was one of the main terminus for most of its voyages from Buffalo.

It is a major exporting center because of its link to all the important cities on the Great Lakes. The first steam vessel which appreared here in 1818 was named the "Walk-in-the-Water".

One of the largest manufacturing cities in the United States, Detroit  is the center of the automobile manufacturing industry. Almost all major car manufacturers of the world has their office in Detroit. The health and medical care sector which flourishes here plays an important part in the economy. Employment in the finance, insurance, and real-estate industries has gained momentum in the Detroit metropolitan area since the early 1990s.
