The city of Gadsden is a city in and the county seat of Etowah County, Alabama. It is the major city in the Gadsden Metro Area. It has a total area of 37.2 square miles, 36 square miles of which is land, and the rest is water. It was settled in 1825, and is named after Colonel James Gadsden of South Carolina. Historically, this city has been known as a center of commerce and industry. Heavy industries here included the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and the Republic Steel Corporation. The commercial significance of the city has since then declined.
Manufacturing, construction, and retail trade are the important economic activities here. Public schooling is administered by the Gadsden City Board of Education. Higher education is provided by Gadsden State Community College, Jacksonville State University, and the University of Alabama; the latter are small satellite institutions. Gadsden Regional Medical Center, and Riverview Regional Medical Center, are the nearest hospitals. Northeast Alabama Regional Airport is the local airport. Local attractions include the Noccalula Falls Park, Coosa River, Lookout Mountain, Gadsden Mall, Mary G. Hardin Center for Cultural Arts and many more.
