Craig Devoe, MD, is chief of the division medical oncology and hematology at R. J. Zuckerberg Cancer Center. He also serves as chief of the hematology-oncology service at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and at North Shore University Hospital. He specializes in treating colon and rectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and malignant melanoma.“I provide ethical, evidence-based, patient-first care,” he says. Research informs much of Dr. Devoe’s clinical practice. He is a scientific investigator with the Northwell Health Cancer Institute’s NCORP (NCI Community Oncology Research Program), consisting of grant- and industry-sponsored trials, and provides oversight of clinical study processes and operations. His research interests include immunotherapy for pancreatic cancer, monoclonal antibodies for melanoma, and vitamin D3 given with chemotherapy and a monoclonal antibody for colon and rectal cancer. As a child, Dr. Devoe developed a fascination with science while watching the TV show Cosmos, hosted by astrophysicist Carl Sagan. Dr. Devoe earned his bachelor’s degree at Cornell University—where Sagan taught. When Sagan later died from pneumonia, a complication of myelodysplasia, which is a precancerous blood disorder, Dr. Devoe decided to pursue a career in medicine. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook and did an internal medicine residency at Winthrop-University Hospital (now NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island). He completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology at SUNY Stony Brook. More recently, Dr. Devoe finished a training program in clinical research design as well as a master’s in health care management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. At Monter, Dr. Devoe takes a team-based approach, meeting with pathologists, radiologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists and geneticists to discuss treatment plans, ensuring patients receive advanced, individualized care. Dr. Devoe is an associate professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, and an active member of the American Medical Association, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Hematology. Dr. Devoe finds providing patients with high-quality care and support the most fulfilling part of his job. “My motto is to take care of patients as if they’re my own family member,” he says.
