Tammer Yamany, MD, joined Northwell Health in 2020 as a urologist at Lenox Hill Hospital, where he diagnoses and treats a variety of prostate, bladder and kidney conditions. He routinely sees patients who have an elevated PSA (prostate specific antigen) level and are concerned about having prostate cancer. To diagnose potential cancer, he performs transperineal fusion prostate biopsy, which combines MRI and ultrasound imaging technology to direct a needle through the perineum and into the prostate to take targeted tissue samples. This newer technique allows him to avoid inserting the needle through the rectal wall, decreasing the risk of infection.
Dr. Yamany manages benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, which can cause urinary problems. He offers a wide variety of medical and surgical treatments that make it easier to urinate and improve a patient’s quality of life. He is one of the few surgeons in New York City to perform laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP or ThuLEP), which is the most effective and durable surgery for BPH that can be performed entirely through the urethra without incisions.
Dr. Yamany manages a wide variety of urologic conditions in addition to the two listed above. He performs evaluation for blood in the urine, which may lead to the diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer. He treats kidney stones and obstruction, bladder stones, and bladder conditions that impact the ability to urinate, in both women and men.
“I always wanted to be a doctor, even as a kid,” he says. “It’s definitely been the right career path for me. I get to see how the treatments I offer can really help people with their quality of life in addition to the life-prolonging treatments we offer for urologic cancers.” Dr. Yamany earned his medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he became interested in urology because of the range of procedures doctors perform on a given day. He then completed a residency in urology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
At Lenox Hill, Dr. Yamany takes a team-based approach to care. Depending on a patient’s diagnosis, he may collaborate with nephrologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and urologic oncologists to decide upon the best evidence-based treatment options. Dr. Yamany is an assistant professor at Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and a member of the American Urologic Association.
For Dr. Yamany, the best part of this job is the relationship he forms with patients. “I genuinely like taking the time talk to people about their care and getting to know them,” he says. “And I love hearing how the treatments I’ve offered them have impacted their lives.”
