Springfield is the third and current capital of the US state of Illinois.The city is operated by a mayor-council form of government.The economy of Springfield is generated by government jobs, which account for a large percentage of the work force in the city.
The State of Illinois is both the city and county's largest employer, employing 17,000 people across Sangamon County. In February 2007, government jobs, including local, state and county, account for about 30,000 of the city's non-agricultural jobs.
