Alvin is a city in Brazoria County, Texas. It is part of the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown Metro Area, and has a total area of 17.3 square miles. 16.4 square miles of the area is land, and the rest is water. The city was established in the mid nineteenth century, and incorporated in 1893, making it the oldest city in the county.
Manufacturing, construction, retail trade and transportation are the major commercial activities here. The city is known for being home to Baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan. There is a museum and an exhibit center dedicated to him. Public education is administered by the Alvin Independent School District, comprising a number of schools.
