Brief Information About Allentown

Allentown is a city in and the county seat of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. It is the third most populous city in the state, with a 2010 population of 118,032. It is also considered the fastest growing city in the state. The city is located along the Lehigh River, and has a total area of 18.0 square miles. 17.8 square miles of the area is land, and the rest is water. Water bodies within the city limits include the Jordan Creek and its tributary, the Little Lehigh Creek, along with Lake Muhlenberg in Cedar Creek Parkway and a pond in Trexler Park. The city sits in a valley bounded by Blue Mountain and South Mountain.

The town was originally established with the name Northampton Town in 1762, by William Allen. It was incorporated as the Borough of Northamptown in 1811. The town was renamed as Allentown n 1838, and then formally incorporated as a city in 1867. The town underwent significant industrialization in the mid nineteenth century with iron, railroad and brewery industries. The significant industries during the last century was the silk and textile industry. In the present cityscape, Center City is the city's central business district and the host to various city, county and federal government centers. The architecture is Victorial and Federal in origin. Old Allentown, the Old Fairgrounds and West Park neighborhoods are the historic downtowns in the city.

Manufacturing is the major economic activity here. Air Products & Chemicals, PPL, and other manufacturing giants have their corporate headquarters here. The Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network is the largest employer for the city. The city has a number of museums, notably Allentown Art Museum, Da Vinci Science Center, Liberty Bell Museum and many more. Musical culture includes the Allentown Symphony Orchestra, Allentown Band, Marine Band of Allentown, Municipal Band of Allentown and the Pioneer Band of Allentown, all of who hold regular performances. Shopping areas include Whitehall Mall, Lehigh Valley Mall and the recent The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley.
