Altoona is a city in Blair County, Pennsylvania. It is the tenth most populous city in the state, and is the principal city of the Altoona Metropolitan Statistical Area. It has a total area of 9.8 sq miles, all of which is land. The city is situated in the Allegheny Mountains. It was initially developed as a railroad town, starting from the proposed establishment of a shop complex in 1849, by the Pennsylvania Railroad. The name is the derivative of a Latin word, meaning "high". It refers to its location in the mountains. Though outside city limits, Logan Township and Tyrone Township, as well as small parts of Allegheny Township and Frankstown Township use Altoona for designation and postal purposes.
The Sheetz headquarters is located here. Sheetz is one of the largest convenience store and gas station chains in the country, and is expanding rapidly. The world's oldest wooden roller coaster, the Leap the Dips, is also located in Altoona, in the Lakemont Park. Center City is the main industrial and commercial area, and also has a number of household residential zones. Altoona-Blair County Airport is the local airport. Altoona Mobile Emergency Department provides Emergency Medical Services for the city. The city has a number of public parks, such as Booker T Washington, Geesey Park, John Roberston Walking Park, Leopold Park, Mansion Park, Prospect Park and many more. Altoona Area Junior High School and Altoona Area High School are the local public schools. The Pennsylvania State University, Ivyside Park campus is also located here. Logan Valley Mall, Target, Wal-Mart, and the Logan Town Centre are shopping destinations within the city.
