Amherst is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. Its population at the 2010 census was 11,201. The town center village, classified as a Census Designated Place (CDP), is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Amherst Village Historic District. The town was named for Lord General Jeffrey Amherst, who commanded British forces in North America during the French and Indian War.
