Aztec is a city in San Juan County, New Mexico. Its population at the 2000 census was 6,378. It is part of the Farmington, New Mexico Metropolitan Statistical Area, and the county seat of San Juan County. Close to the city is the Aztec Ruins National Monument.
The city has a total area of 9.8 square miles, of which, 9.7 square miles of it is land and 0.1 square miles of it (0.82%) is water.
The economy is based on local businesses, professional services, sales and service, and production, construction and transport of materials.
About 20% of the population is estimated to be of Hispanic origin.
